Dryer Vent Cleaning is Non-Negotiable
Lint buildup in dryer vents is a leading, yet preventable, cause of house fires. Make it a
habit to clean the lint filter after every single load. This simple step is crucial. Additionally,
perform a deeper clean at least annually. Disconnect the dryer (unplug it first!) and use a
specialized dryer vent cleaning brush kit to thoroughly clear the entire length of the vent
duct run, from the dryer to the outside vent. Consider replacing flexible foil or plastic
ducting with smooth-walled metal ducts for better airflow and reduced lint buildup. Don't
forget to clear lint from the exterior vent cover flap too.

DIY Tips
Here are a few DIY tips we've picked up over the years
Walnut Shell For Blending
Use a walnut to hide scratches on wood. For minor dings and scratches on wooden furniture or floors, rub a walnut (the nutshell itself) over the area. The natural oils in the walnut can help camouflage the scratch by darkening the exposed wood to blend with the surrounding finishRubber Band for Stripped Screws
Use a rubber band for stripped screws. If you have a screw with a stripped head that you can't get a screwdriver to grip, place a wide rubber band flat over the head of the screw before trying to turn it with the screwdriver. The rubber band fills in the stripped area and can provide enough grip to get the screw out.Fix Warped Deck Boards
Flip cupped boards early, secure with screws. Look for pooled water—poor drainage warps wood. Keep 1/8” gaps between boards & seal both sides. Inspect yearly to catch issues earlyDon't Attract Termites
Store firewood and other wood materials away from the house and off the ground.Installing A Floor Yourself?
Ensure your subfloor is properly prepared – clean, level, and dry. Neglecting this can lead to an uneven finished surface, squeaks, gaps, and even damage to the new flooring over time, regardless of the material you choose.Lighting is Everything (While Painting and After)
Don't try to paint in dim light. Use portable work lights to illuminate the surface you're working on from different angles. This will help you spot holidays (thin spots) and ensure even coverage. And remember, paint color can look drastically different in different lighting conditions (natural daylight vs. artificial light). Always test a sample on your wall and look at it at different times of day before committing to a color.
DIY Tip: Warped Deck Boards
— Tools, Tech, & DIY | Weekly Newsletter (@Tools_Tech_DIY) April 25, 2025
Warping comes from uneven moisture. Flip cupped boards early, secure w/ screws. Trace warping to poor drainage—check for pooled water. Ensure 1/8” gaps btw boards for air. Seal both sides yearly to balance moisture.#QuickRepair
